KVM probably does have the option to do this (it's available in Proxmox, for example) - whether it's exposed in SmartOS (or even ported) is another question.
I have got around this in the past by making an ISO with grub configured to wait 60 seconds before quitting/handing back to the BIOS. Gives long enough to get the VNC port and connect.
