Greetings All, Hope that everyone is doing well.
For a current small container based project that I am working on, I have been researching and learning about all of the MANY options available as well as the competing technologies. The project that I am working on is really to utilize docker containers and kubernetes to run a load-balanced HA site that will have a number of nodes (dynamic) as well as some websites each of which will have their own container and all of which will share connections to a MySQL cluster. The project site will also have some micro-services running as well to handle some of the API stuff. In any case, I have looked heavily in to things like CoreOS with Kubernetes on perhaps a Kontena layer for container management as well as have looked at RancherOS with the Rancher Server for the orchestrator. I have also reviewed other such =, but much more complicated, offerings but feel that this is all stepping away from the base project and having to spend a lot of time managing containers instead of working on the project integration. I also, at least for now, did not want to go with using AWS, GCS, DigitalOcean, etc... and wanted to set up a good POC using as much open sourced stuff as I could which also give a good change to customize and mold the idea before moving to the next level which will be a more professional setup of the base design. Needless to say, I was not really happy with what I have seen especially when it comes to clustering nodes and stability with some of the guides that I have tried in those areas. More to the point, was that I came across SmartOS and Triton which seems to be in much more alignment with that I want for the basis of the project to build upon, but a question that I have was how well does it scale. I know that some container offerings can easily scale to hundreds and hundreds of concurrently running containers with low impact on the total system, but I was not sure about how well SmartOS can scale and wanted to ask the community? Also, I was wondering about how easily it might be to set up something like PeerVPN or TincVPN between SmartOS nodes so that they could all be on the same subnet, etc.... Any input from the community would be greatly appreciated.
