(Obligatory reminder that vmadm send/receive are not supported, considered experimental, etc, and to use your judgement depending on what and how badly is failing.)
Looking at the error, first thing I'd do is check who actually owns /zones/a701146d-3790-4150-92b8-3e30731b7b34/root ? (And I assume you're running command as root or sudo'ed) Also, hardware availability/transfer speed allowing, I'd try vmadm send-ing (through gzip or whatnot) to a local drive or known working, mounted NFS share or similar, for simplicity/troubleshooting. If that doesn't work, you might try creating an image out of the zone, using "imgadm create". Not as handy as vmadm send, but still nicer than manually copying data out of a running zone.
