This should be on the SDC list however...

There was some work underway to make this task easier, but I don't know what
became of it.

If I want a stripe of mirrors, I pull all bar one drive before the install
and then build the pool around it later.

The last couple of CNs I built had too much memory to allow this with the
smallish drives they had so I just let the install go through. I then
snapshotted the pool (modulo dump and swap), sent the snapshot to another
box, rebuilt the CN zones pool and sent the snapshot back. Inelegant but
effective!

I don't think I have ever wanted the default layout and do wish it could be
specified.
I believe a layout (as well as cache and spare options) can be
specified at compute node setup time, by virtue of work done in at
least this change:

More detail appears to be available in RFD 53:

Ah thanks,

That was the change I was half remembering.  I didn't think to check the CLI rather than the GUI..  It would be nice to see this documented on https://docs.joyent.com/private-cloud/install/compute-node-setup.

Cheers,
