I have this blog post saved: http://www.daveeddy.com/2015/07/19/smartos-pkgsrc-caching-proxy/
I haven't done it my self but it's on my todo list.

Now off my todo list :-)

It works nicely, but some observations:

1. The supplied SMF manifest instructs the process to run under user='nobody' group='nobody', so you need to ensure that nobody:nobody has write access to the suggested /data/pkgsrc-proxy
   directory

2. The manifest points to http://pkgsrc.joyent.com. Any attempt at changing that to use https failed, without showing anything in the log. pkgin on the client reports "file not found"
   here.

3. fs-caching-server doesn't respond to https. You need to specify plain http in the client's
   pkgin/repositories.conf

Would be nice if there was something on images.joyent.com though, but I haven't found one yet.

I've been using this with success http://blog.smartcore.net.au/dsapid-build-smartos-dataset-server/

The /data/config.json examples there use either plain http or a mixture of http and https. I recently changed mine to use https alone and that seems to work. I am using datasets.at
