remove makedev ...
apt-get remove --purge makedev; apt-get install -f; apt-get autoclean;
apt-get clean; apt-get update; apt-get upgrade; apt-get dist-upgrade;
apt-get autoremove
reboot the lx container ... be happy ;)

I’ve got an Ubuntu 15 lx zone set up in joyent_20170831T155808Z using
the ffe82a0a-83d2-11e5-b5ac-f3e14f42f12d image:
ffe82a0a-83d2-11e5-b5ac-f3e14f42f12d ubuntu-15.04 20151105
linux lx-dataset 2015-11-05
Interestingly, the zone seems to think it is:
Welcome to Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS (GNU/Linux 3.13.0 x86_64)
I’m not sure how the zone went from 15 to 16… Hm.
Currently, "apt-get upgrade" is currently failing trying to run mknod.
Does anyone recognise this sort of problem, or do I need to rebuild
this zone using a more recent image?
