Adrian, Before getting too far into this, at the grub prompt there will be a statement toward the bottom that says what the current console device is. If the device is ttyb or serial then it's normal to see the output you describe on the VGA console. It wouldn't mean that there's a problem, just that the output is being sent elsewhere.
