Ideally, if I didn't want the PIN to be prompted at startup, I wouldn't
set it in the SIM.  However, if you mean remembering the PIN across
repeated sephora invocations in a short period of time, it could indeed
be reasonable to cache it.  But then you should lock it into
nonswappable ram pages, using some sort of a daemon that runs as root
(to lock pages in to ram) and persists across sephora invocations, but
that forgets the PIN after some time.  It sounds like reimplementing
gpg-agent or ssh-agent, and I wonder if they could be recycled somehow.
