Hmm, yes, maybe I should switch back to Illume again... (I switched
away from it, several months ago, after getting a bit annoyed by it
being so monolithic, and having trouble coding a shelf gadget for
screen rotation, and then having a big system crash that required me
to reinstall from scratch. After that I was in a mood to prefer
smaller independent tools, like o-p-p, matchbox-keyboard, and so on.)
FWIW, though, I currently use o-p-p for:
- seeing how strong the GSM signal is
- popping the keyboard up and down
- PWR button handling: pops up a menu with shutdown, lock etc.
- stopping and starting Wifi
- battery capacity, charging status, and forcing fast charge (when in a car)
- stopping and starting bluetooth
- a visual confirmation that GPS is on (when it should do).

I agree it would be better to fix it. However, if you are going to
set up the default Debian install to use illume, and
wiki.debian.org/DebianOnFreeRunner is updated to mention this o-p-p
problem, and to point out that people who want to use o-p-p can do so
with odeviced (and also with my patch, if the default kernel is going
to be an up-to-date andy-tracking one) - in my view, that would be a
perfectly reasonable position. (And I can help with the wiki changes,
if you like, and if it's possible for a non-DD.)
Regards,
Neil
