Hannes,
Your problem continues to intrigue me. Can you eventually connect with
your Linux client by hard-coding your share's server's IP address ? This
would at least exclude the possibility of naming services (DNS/WINS) not
functioning properly because of your firewall.
Kind regards,

Hey PhB,
I'm using yast to configure my firewall. In the firewall modul of yast I
opened the ports 137 138 193 (tcp and udp) in the "extern zone" and
in "demilitarized zone". Unfortunately the firewall still blocks the
samba-client. Is it maybe possible to reset the firewall back to the standard
settings? Maybe this could help.
Greetings,
Hannes

Hannes,
I have OpenSuSE 10.0, which is a similar configuration. Indeed, looking
in Yast reveals there's no way to configure the firewall explicitly for
a samba *client*. I suppose you are using yast to configure your
firewall ? If so, try enabling for your network interface going on your
local network (in the 'zone' typically called 'Internal Zone' or
'Demilitarized Zone' in Yast) via the button called 'Advanced' all TCP
and UDP ports 137,138 and 139.
Or in the other case, which firewall technology are you using ? iptables
? In that case, how does your script look like ?
I have to say that I am not convinced this will help, because it seems
rather bizarre that the SuSE firewall wouldn't even allow connections
being established even if initiated from the machine itself. Knowing
(/supposing ?) that the samba servers don't open connections on their
own initiative towards the clients (only *if* they would, my suggestion
would help you further, eventually)
Hope this helps,
PhB

Hello,
I've installed openSUSE 10.2 on my computer. In the same network group of
my computer are two more computers on witch WinXP is installed. The
problem is that I can't access the shares on the WinXP computers from my
linux computer.
When I temporary switch of the suse firewall I have access on the WinXp
shares. So it's sure that the firewall on my linux computer blocks the
samba-client. Unfortunately I don't know how to configure the firewall so
that the samba-client would be allowed to connect to other computers. In
the firewall modul of yast I may only allow to open connections to the
samba-server. I already searched for some help in some German linux
forums but until now noone could help me to solve the problem.
I'd be very glad to get some help.
