Like you, I tried to get Samba/Winbind to work seamlessly with Active Directory. After several years of band-aid solutions, I finally gave up. Thankfully, LikeWise provided a free version of their commercial product called LikeWise Open.
http://www.likewiseopen.org/ SSO is much easier with LWO I call LikeWise Open "Samba on Steroids".
