I think that's more likely to be understandable to more people than
"alternate repository".  But it's entirely possible that I'm
underestimating users' familiarity with SMF.

Yes.  I'm just concerned for the people who don't know, or have
forgotten, that the running snapshot is supposed to be authoritative for
most configuration.  I think "commit" makes that clear, whereas "update"
hints at it and leaves the user to extrapolate.  But I don't want us to
spend an inordinate amount of time on the help text, so I'll accept
whatever you and Alan choose.
