I see what your saying. SMF would have a generic framework that would take URL syntax to fetch a config file. svcadm getconf <svcname>. Then the manifest would point to where to get the file. It would also be great if SMF could manage conditions when it couldn't fetch the configuration file (use a cached copy). Or maybe use a local and remote config file.
Also consider the use of a Kerberos enabled web server that comes with Solaris 10 now as the config repository so a mechanism could exist for a secure fetch of configuration information.
