David, Thanks for looking over this for me and for the tip regarding the use of the FMRI.
With regard to updating instances, my intention was to update non-standard Solaris instances so that they included the latest options but to keep the non-standard start method. Thus making the options available for future use. One other thought I have had since is that an option could contain the true execution path which the smf_method could then exec once it has collected the command line options, Thus the smf_method script would not need to hard code the final execution path.
