Pravan, I wasn't able to find the answer to your question in a public places, so I'm coying this from the original SMF design notes that were submitted for PSARC case 2002/547. The PSARC postings for OpenSolaris don't go back that far.
3.2.2.1 Property names Property names (as well as property group names and instance names) are restricted to match the regular expression ([A-Za-z][ A-Za-z0-9.-]*,)?[A-Za-z][ A-Za-z0-9-]* with the . character in the first phrase being literal.
