fwiw, I fixed my problem by manually enabling the volfs service: svc:/system/filesystem/volfs:default
thought it is still a mystery how it got disabled in the first place. also I'd have appreciated if vold would have indicated some error/messages in the /var/adm/vold.log, the volfs SMF logfile I eventually located just told me "disabled" - nice - I already known that - but when and how ?
