Thanks, I should have thought of that.

Here is the relevant part of the log:

[ Feb 25 17:16:17 Stopping because service disabled. ]
[ Feb 25 17:16:17 Executing stop method (null). ]
[ Feb 25 17:16:47 Enabled. ]
[ Feb 25 17:17:04 Executing start method ("/lib/svc/method/fs-local"). ]
WARNING: /sbin/mountall -l failed: exit status 1
[ Feb 25 17:17:05 Method "start" exited with status 95. ]

Just now, after booting successfully with the UFS file system set not to mount 
during boot, I changed "mount at boot" to "yes" in vfstab, and ran "mountall 
-l". The UFS file system mounted successfully. So I am still mystified.
