Are you talking about legacy Solaris patching, for Solaris 10, or are you talking about some other kind of patching? If you are talking about legacy Solaris patching ... There was quite a discussion on how to do this a bit over a year ago, about how to get patching to occur at exactly the right point. The result was CR 6784548, delivered in S10 update 8. (Sorry, don't know how that maps to release dates.) It's a general plan for how automated patching services can hook into system startup. We could dig up the details if that would be helpful.
