To put it in a nutshell: the heavy coloured line shows the median (which is almost always *not* the average). The more it turns to red (from green over blue) the more packet loss you have. The "smoke" shows the actual distribution of the probe resulsts. The broader the smoke the higher the variance of the probe. Each probe with value x and median m generates a grey area with height |x-m| based at m. Areas are layered and the smoke gets darker. Ideally you have a green line without any smoke.
