I found the culprit. It was an error in the apache config file.
Alias /smokeimg/ /henkel/smokeping/smokeping/htdocs/img The trailing "/" was missing in the alias Changing this to: Alias /smokeimg/ /henkel/smokeping/smokeping/htdocs/img/ solved the problem.
