One of our smokeping implementations monitors ~3000 devices. As Tobias pointed out, pinging is not the main issue (although you would have a problem if you have many non-responsive targets). The main problem is disk I/O. Things like disk type (e.g. fast SCSI), FS type (e.g. NOT ext3), RAID level (e.g. 0) should be considered carefully.
