Very strange... my SmokePing machine at work is an old Pentium 4 2.66GHz
with 1GB of RAM, and I run 7 pollers (1 default + 6 'real' ones) over
~100 hosts with no problems. I have other stuff running on the box as
well (Cacti, mysqld, and some internally developed tools). My machine
is OpenBSD 4.4, though Linux shouldn't be much different in terms of
hardware requirements.
I've rarely seen software cause hard lockups on a *NIX box; have you
checked for hardware problems? RAM, disk controllers, etc? Anything
showing up in dmesg? Maybe there's something that only starts to show
up when the machine is under load.
