In your targets configuration no slave is being used. Check again the manual at https://oss.oetiker.ch/smokeping/doc/smokeping_master_slave.en.html What you seem to be missing is the slave usage in targets. It may be as simple as a typo. Another possibility: IIRC, the parent will refuse to use the secrets file if the permissions are set too expansively. Finally, is the parent/child actually able to access the secrets file - are permissions too narrow. Running both parent/child servers with --debug is often fairly helpful, since it gives you a lot of detail.
