Both the ReadMessages and SendMessage example sources are in the "examples/modem/" folder. There is no wiki page for the SendMessage example yet.
Yes, you can use USB, as long as you find the virtual comm port that is connected to your USB port. Run the CommTest in order to scan all your available ports.
