Hmm... and I thought we were at the end... :( Its natural for virtual com ports (i.e. usb or other mapped ports) to appear and disappear, following the "existence" of the device they refer to.
>From your tests, I really believe that the COM4 port is the port that should be used, but it seems that somebody (Vista? - a bundled application?) is holding its port - that's why you get ownership errors.
