I do not understand the first question.

2) SMSServer need to do polling anyway by design because some phones
don't accept to work in async mode. That is what Thanasis said to me
whe I did almos the same question. SMSSErver must to be as general as
possible I think.

3) Access is a very bad DB and I do not recomend to use, but anyway it
must to work as soon there is a jdbc driver. The only thing you can
figure is how to invoke the driver and the url to access the data. Is
really simple. the problematic part is to recover from the crashes :).
