I think that you already understand this :)

You should keep the destination numbers when you send out messages.
Without those numbers, you won't be able to match the delivery
reports.
In a few words:

When you send a message, you keep the SMSC RefNo as well as the
recipient's number.
When you get a delivery report back, you match the DR's data with the
SMSC/Recipient.
