A GSM Modem is always the best solution, but it may be the most expensive. Most standard (i.e. non smart), non-Symbian phones can be used. Serial or USB drivers are supplied by the manufacturer. The serial connectivity is the easiest one. USB phones also appear at non-standard serial ports. You can also try one of the sub $20 usb 3g modems (see my experiences here: http://blog.smslib.org/2011/05/hojy-wyless600-usb-modem.html).
