What it could be (hopefully):
My SMSServer.conf had "0000" in the modem.pin, which I'd just ignored since 
I don't have a pin.  I changed this to empty now, and it seems to be 
working quickly.

If so, assume the E1820 is compatible.  I'll update here if I have issues 
with it.
