Plea to raise new STARS in the sky
By KRISTEN ENEVOLD, CALGARY SUN

Having two more STARS in the sky means Albertans will have to raise
$10 million to help pay for the life-saving helicopters. "It's the
biggest capital campaign we've ever endeavoured," said Lance
Stephenson, a flight paramedic and spokesman for the Alberta Shock
Trauma Air Rescue Society.

"And it's a good cause because you never know when you or a loved one
will need us."

So far, $15 million has been raised towards the purchase of two
brand-new choppers, but cash remaining for the $25-million project
depends on the generosity of Albertans.

A medical education and research centre is also included in the price
tag.

Stephenson said two more helicopters in the STARS fleet will allow
them to fly further, faster, and they will also be better equipped.

"These new helicopters have heated blades, so we can travel in icy
weather, and they can also carry a minimum of two patients at a
time," he said.

The new choppers are expected to be ready within the next two or
three years, bringing the STARS fleet up to six helicopters.
