OK, I will give it a go.

While I do fancy a newer machine, I was hoping to avoid the expense until the 
new year.
Is the issue I have likely to worsen over time? (Does the fault have a name?)
If Apple decline my request, am I looking at an expensive repair?

You could try calling Apple and argue that you're exhibiting the symptoms and 
therefore deserve a warranty extension, failing that it's probably best to get 
a new intel iMac as the performance increase will be definitely worth it.
