Hi Virginia Try double clicking or right clicking on the wireless connection indicator, then if any menu items say "view available wireless networks" or "site survey" or anything to do with scanning for available networks, click them. That should get you to a list of wireless networks, choose the one your Mac's connected to and type in a password if necessary.
If that doesn't work please be more specific about what's on screen!
