It turns out there was a mini-cd (one of the 8cm ones) in the
superdrive!? I can't imagine why I would have put it in as it is a
driver disk for a wireless LAN adapter which has never been plugged
into the Macbook, so possibly small-boy-related after all. Once I
managed to hook that out it works fine. Seemingly slot drives are
generally unhappy about mini-cds, understandable really given how they
must work.
