HI Nigel i'd boot from the OS installer DVD that came with the computer, first use Disk Utility from the Utilities menu and repair the disk, then reinstall the OS. When it asks which disk to install, select your MacBook's internal HD then click on options, tick "archive & reinstall" and click OK, follow the rest of the instructions and let the installer do its thing. You'll need to reinstall any system updates or printer/scanner drivers but the OS should be a fresh copy from the disc.
If the kernel panics continue then it might be a hardware error, mostly related to faulty memory.
