Hi John

Have a look at the Console and look for any repeating entries from
mdworker. I worked a server that I upgraded to 10.5 and the designers
had left a folder of fonts in the RAID. Mdworker was scanning the
fonts and crashing repeatedly, which in turn pushed the CPU usage for
a process called 'syslogd' up to 100% as it was constantly writing
logs of the crashes to the system log, 'alsmanager' was also at 100%
as well. The Spotlight menu item also reported that it was constantly
estimating time of completion, never able to actually give a time.

Adding the folder of fonts to the Spotlight exclude list temporarily
enabled the server to work again while we scanned the corrupted fonts
and removed them (all!).

If nothing's crashing it could just be a case of leaving it overnight.

Regards

Sam
