my last generation MB (pre-aluminium) had a very noisy fan. I 
took it apart in the end and found that the RAM was covered with 
fine white power that I cleaned up (anyone reading anything into 
'fine white powder' has a dirty mind, by the way....) and then 
it improved.

Bit of a mystery. I vacuumed as much as I could from the machine 
to remove as much as possible, cleaned the RAM chips and put 
them back.

So it might be dust in there somehow...
