I've always found that if you create the bootcamp partition, then the  
installation goes wrong, then you try and erase the partition and  
recreate it with the Windows installer, that'll give you errors.

You need to boot back into the Mac, go to the Utilities folder, open  
Bootcamp Assistant, revert to a single volume, restart, then try the  
whole process again.

Make sure your XP installer disc is SP2 or above.
