There used to be diagnostic LEDs on the user-serviceable iMac G5s (without iSight). The iMacs after that, especially intel, are much trickier to get into and will void your warranty if you do.
It could very well be a thermal issue, if the SMC reset doesn't work I'd take it in for servicing under warranty.
