Hi Michael

With my website and hosting business, I'm a partner for ESET/NOD32 so I get to run ESET Smart Security for free. Having said that, its probably unnecessary as I read no emails into the Windoze system and have the XP firewall switched on (and its behind a router). I normally just browse local files to test websites
(in IE6/7/8) that I build. If Windoze users ask for advice, I always tell them to avoid any Norton product and I recommend ESET/NOD32 as that's what I was using before I saw the light and switched to Apple Mac a few years ago.

I'm running Parallels 4 (I was using version 3 until recently) and XP Pro on both a Mac Pro and a Macbook Pro. No problems at all. The XP Pro was bought from eBay and was fine too, even though it was an OEM version. Around £50 I think. I only needed to install once. As soon as its running under Parallels you make a copy of the folder inside '(your username)/Library/Parallels' (mine is called 'winxp') and that's your WinXP backup in the event Windoze gets screwed somehow. I have a couple of generations stored for this folder. No need for an Windoze backup utilities, although Parallels 4 includes them for free (I think) and also has a snapshot facility.
As others have said, avoid Vista as its awful.

All,

At long last I am going to have to accept the inevitable and run
windows on one of my macs. One client keeps writing little
windows .exe applications to demonstrate user interfaces and I can no
longer come up with any excuse as to why I can't run them. So...

Parallels seems the obvious way to go, but since I don't need Vista,
is there anything wrong with buying a copy of XP off eBay? Am I likely
to be making a big mistake?

Thoughts anybody?
Phil
