basically, when mail is left on a pop-server, it has to exist on 
a disk *somewhere* (in this case owned by whoever your domain 
server is). What we deciphered on the Mailsmith list was that 
what was probably happening was that (hypothetically)

10 am I download 5 messages and leave them on the server

11 am the disk the ISP is using gets full and some of the stuff 
on it is copied to disk2 at the ISP

11.30 I check in again and my emailer somehow detects that 
something has changed and thinks they are all new messages.

this is the likeliest scenario that they could come up with.
