I have a problem that has been driving me mad for several months now. Trying
to watch Video podcasts in iTunes has become a very hit and miss affair. At
seemingly random intervals the video and audio get very choppy, out of sync
and sometimes even stall completely for a few seconds. Not always though.
Sometimes I can watch 2-3 podcasts with no trouble. Other times it gets
choppy in every video I try and watch.

I initially thought that it must be just HD video but lower res video is
doing the same.

Setup is:

Macbook 2Ghz with 2GB RAM - All software fully up to date. iTunes library
stored on internal disk.

Things I have tried so far:

   - Closing all other apps
   - Creating a new user with no startup items and watching the video in
   iTunes
   - Repairing disk permissions
   - Running fsck in Single user mode
   - Uninstalling Perian (in case some of the codecs had screwed up
   something in Quicktime)
   - Disconnecting all external USB devices

Things noted so far:

   - The problem occurs whether in full screen or windowed
   - The processor % for iTunes never hits 100% when this issue occurs -
   normally it's well below 100%
   - There is always plenty of free RAM available
   - There is always approx 15% free disk space available on the boot drive

I am at a total loss as to what could be causing this. Lots of googling show
many people with this issue using iTunes 7 but not many using 8. Could this
be down to drive fragmentation?

Anyone ever seen this? Or better yet fixed it?

many thanks
