Hi, Virginia,

While the MacBook Pro comes with iLife 09 as part of the package,
iWork 09 is a to-pay-for product. The Pages component of iWork handles
all but the most complex MS Word document layouts. You just have to
remember to use either the 'Save as' or 'Export' options in the File
menu to save as an MS Word document. With just using Pages you'd have
to either remember to open Word document email attachments with Pages
or make Pages the default application to open files with a .doc suffix
using the Get Info option for a .doc file and using the 'Open with'
section of the Get Info panel.

There are other options instead of MS Word - OpenOffice, Google
Docs.....
