Safari 4.0.3 runs on Leopard. I have 10.5.8 and Safari 4.0.3 runs
perfectly well. If you are running 10.5.5 maybe you need to do an
update. In fact my Powerbook is running Safari 4.0.3 and Leopard
10.5.8. it cannot be upgraded to Snow Leopard. It runs iTunes 9
perfectly well.

To be honest I rarely used the green button.
