Hi John

Holding down command + S at startup will put the system into single
user mode. Once it's started up and you can type commands in type :

fsck -fy

let the system scan the drive for errors and fix any, then type :

mount -uw /

that'll mount the drive with write access, then type :

rm /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist

That'll delete a preference file, then type :

reboot

See if that helps
