Thanks to all who have contributed suggestions, so far. I've looked at
all your suggestions, but was waiting to reply in case there were
more. Don't want to stem the flow. I don't want to write film scripts,
so MooDex is the nearest so far.

What I'd ideally like would be to have a number of cards open within a
work area, and to be able to place lumps of text (from one word up)
and (scalable) sketches etc on them, as I can do on index cards.

The point is that both the content, and the collection, can be
organised spatially: and items on cards, as well as cards can be moved
around as chunks. I find this continues to be a tremendously good way
of organising things, which is why I continue using index cards, and
will often lay them out in a spatial arrangement on a desk before
giving talks. In some ways it's more like a drawing than a writing
program, but when items are placed on a card, they are anchored there
where you place them—whether bits of text in adjustable sized text
boxes, or images: you don't have to group, lock or anything like that;
that's automatic.

The old program I had allowed quite a lot of this, though the text was
still entered from top left, and flowed down, and it could only be
organised in a grid and without gaps.

This really is a very nice way of developing and organising thoughts,
specially for exploring ways of telling stories that might hang the
thoughts together, and (by use of colour, links, sizing and placement)
of ordering thoughts within a particular area. I also find that the
strategic use of card titles, and code numbers, is a great help.

Well, there we are. That's more than I'd tell my shrink, if I had one.
