As long as you follow some basic rules you do not need them. If your  
machine has its firewall on and is behind a hardware firewall router  
you should be perfectly safe. Though it will help if you change your  
router password from the default. If necessary get a password manager  
to manage the passwords. Have it do the same to any wifi passwords,  
and try and use randomly generated passwords as they will make the  
machine more secure as well.

Avoid dodgy websites as these are the main routes for your machine  
being accessed. Even turn off installed plug ins in Safari. Your  
browser is probably the greatest risk to your machine, one way or  
another.

Do not download software of bit torrent as some is infected with  
Trojans though many forums will tell you which and even how to avoid  
them. If you need AV get ClamX AV as that is free and does a good job.  
Though chances are you will only need it to stop your friends Window  
malware being accidently spread by you. I have used it for two years  
and never seen anything.
