What Chris Staples wrote is my understanding too. If you visit the Spotify website without an invitation from someone you cannot sign up to the free service. You can sign up for the Premium service without an invite, here:
http://www.spotify.com/en/products/free/#get-started If you use the link below (shared earlier) you bypass the need for an invitation: https://www.spotify.com/en/get-started/ Which is kind of curious.... So, in summary, if you want a free Spotify account you don't need an invitation just the link above - until they close the loophole. It's such an excellent service, I can put up with the adverts for the time being....
