Hi Andrew

You can back up as many macs as you want to the same drive, obviously
the more you add the less space there will be for backups.

The files in the time machine backup are stored in a way you can
navigate and yes if you want to move files from the backup to another
machine you can just drag and drop. It's a good idea not to remove
stuff from the time machine backup if you can avoid it.

I have partitioned my external which is mainly for backup. One
partition is the Time Machine drive and another I use to shuttle stuff
from one mac to another.

You can create a partition using Disk Utility, just be careful not to
erase the existing stuff on the drive :-)
