This is probably not the reason, but it sounds like a problem I had with my 
Netgear router. I had the extension cable plugged into the wall socket, the 
splitter into that and then the modem/router into the splitter. This kept 
causing line drops - I'd reboot the router and it was fine and then a few 
minutes later it did it again. And again. And again. The solution was to put 
the splitter into the wall socket and the modem/router into the splitter - 
sorted :-)
