Hi John You can only use an iMac 21.5" or 27" as an external monitor, and that's only with a DIsplayPort compatible adapter. Previous iMacs don't support video input. You could get yourself a cheap widescreen 19" monitor for around £100 then, if it has both DVI and VGA, connect it to your PC and iMac (with a Mini-DVI to DVI/VGA adapter) as an external monitor for both systems.
